Lets just start by saying that French Bulldogs are awesome! LOL. Before I go on to tell you all that goes along with getting a frenchie, that needed to be said. They are great family dogs, and it really is no joke that they are like potato chips......you can't have just one! Frenchies, however, are not your typical, average dog. They do require extra care. There is tons of information on the web, and I do suggest that you do your research before ever diving into the world of frenchies. I am just going to touch on a few basic things that I think are important to know for anyone who is considering getting a frenchie.
#1---French Bulldogs NEED a good quality dog food! This is important! Frenchies are prone to allergies and you may go through several types of food before you find the one that works best for your puppy. I do recommend you listen to what your breeder suggests as they should know what your puppy has been doing good on while in their care.
#2---They are STUBBORN. This does not just mean they have a mind of their own. Frenchies can be very difficult to potty train, too. Let me tell you, though, if I can potty train one so can you!! They are very treat driven, and if you are consistent, and give positive reinforcement you will do well! DON'T GIVE UP! Also, do not let them think they are in charge. Be the leader of the pack, and make sure they listen so they don't become unruly jerks!
#3---THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! Do NOT allow your frenchie to be jumping off of furniture (couches, beds, other high places). Frenchies are prone to back issues, and although it seems innocent at the time, it can eventually cause IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease). I suggest you look it up. If this is able to be fixed, it is VERY costly. I suggest you always lift them off of any high places or get them stairs or a ramp to use.
#4---Make sure you are getting a frenchie from a reputable breeder. There are tons of scammers these days, and they love to "sell you" a cheap frenchie. Check references, video chat, do what you need to until you feel comfortable!! If you can't decide if they are a scammer or not, I wouldn't risk it! If the price is way cheaper than everyone else's then it is either a scammer or a breeder you prob don't want to deal with. These are not cheap dogs, and if you're looking for a cheap one I'm guessing you're going to regret it later when you run into tons of vet fees. This isn't always true, and you may get lucky, but beware.
And last (until I decide to add more. lol) #5---Pet insurance is ALWAYS a good idea! Vet fees can get expensive. SO unless you have plenty saved up for the "what if's" you might want to consider the insurance to protect your pup!
